Why I will be getting an iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 64GB

Ok so here we go. Despite being eager to pick up an iPad this past weekend I will use my Jedi-Ninja-like restraint skillz and hold off till the end of the month when Apple’s iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 64GB will become available. My friend Edwin picked his iPad up on launch day, April 3rd from Best Buy and I admit my envy of his purchase. He proudly taunted me with his Pics on Facebook and I watched several reviews of the iPad since. This thing looks delicious.

I know many people are disappointed by the lack of some features like a camera and ‘multi-tasking’. Its my opinion that these will be available on 2nd or 3rd Gen devices. Sheesh its the Apple way no? Good Marketing? Its Steve! Heck, the thing is sexay and quite functional from the looks of it. This device is just what I need for my computing needs, traveling needs, presentation needs, and more.

The reason I’m holding off is that I want the ability to not have to rely on Wi-Fi. Its awesome but there are times when I will need a 3G connection and this will be my choice of devices to carry around on quick trips, or if I’m going to a coffee house and don’t want to lug around my MacBook Pro.

Yeah I’ll probably max it out and get the iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter, iPad Camera Connection Kit, iPad Dock and iPad Case to complete the ensemble. I really like the quality of Apple’s products and think this would enhance my computing experience. Although I’m picking up my geekery gear, I ‘m downsizing my overall accessories I’d be carrying to and from meetings and conferences.

I have been working on developing a few medical based apps for the iPhone and this will be a natural transition. I plan to utilize the iPad for multiple functions including teaching and presenting as well as personal geekery!

What about you? Have you decided to get an iPad? Did you already get one or are you waiting for the 3G?

  • I really thought about waiting for the 3G but I already have a wireless card with Sprint so it just made sense for me to get the wifi only. As for use, I think that most people will use it just as you described.

Last night, I chilled at Starbucks with this thing, reading some blogs and answering some emails. And before bed, I watched some shows using the abc player and checked out social networking sites. For my short visits to the bay area when I visit family, this is what I'll be bringing instead of my mbp.

As for future generations of the iPad, I finally have come to grips that I AM AN EARLY ADOPTER. I will get the latest and greatest. Its just in my nature and I think you are the same. When that next generation comes out, I'll probably hand this down to my brother or sister or even my nephews who are getting to that age where this type of technology will benefit them.

I can't wait for you to get yours. You're going to love it! And I also can't wait to see the apps you're working on.
  • Rock On Edwin. Thats awesome. I can imagine being in Starbucks or the like just chilling reading a book or surfing the web, catching a video or something with the iPad. It seems to just makes sense to have one in our lifestyles. I agree that we are EARLY ADOPTERS (aka Geeks) that enjoy their Geekery Gadgets and must have the latest and greatest as soon as humanly possible. Its in our DNA. My father was a Jedi before me and I like my father am Jedi.
