Ok, so its no secret that I have gracefully gained (inherited) some weight in my married years. (Insert excuse Here). Recently I’ve started to play indoor soccer again in an over 35 league. My mind wants and says that I can do some of the things I used to be able to do (run) when I was in High School and College. I played on some competitive and successful teams and still have that engrained in my head.
It seems though that my body has other thoughts. As dis-proportionate as my body has become (gut), the rest of the body is still in decent shape. I carry my weight in “me bellay”. I joke that my wife often says to me, “What happened to your six pack?”, to which I reply “Who needs a six pack when ya got the whole keg?”. I’ve been saying this for years. The many new years resolutions gone by and teetering around 240-250lbs on a 5′6″ frame has become ridiculous and I’m fed up.

Last year I launched FatAssToFit.com with the intentions of getting into better shape and creating a community of people that were like me, who have life happening all around them, including work and family….yadda yadda yadda….who wanted to get into better health/shape. My approach to maintaining the site mirrored my approach to fitness and it fell by wayside. I still have plans to resurrect the site and post fitness related content there. I hope to attract others who would like to contribute and guest post there.
That brings us to this week. My friend, Brandice, sent a message out on Facebook and posted a blog about stating a Couch to 5K (C25K) program. Her blog post was very descriptive, inspiring and humorous all together. Naturally, something about it reached out to me and I thought I’d investigate it (Download the App, and Start the program less than 24 hours after I read her post, almost infected by the Social Media Virus that she sent out…Thank Brandice…really appreciate this one).
So the C25K App was downloaded, and I had my plan. After setting up my Playlist and becoming familiar with the App (its realy quite simple), I went to the Pottstown YMCA and hit the track. There was a 5 minute warm up (Brisk walk, Really? This is a warm up? Feeling tight in my calves already…..this is gonna be a long workout) Then you alternate Running (Jog) for 60 seconds with a 90 second walk. There is an automated man’s voice inside the App who prompts you at each interval. You’ll quickly anticipate this voice ( with hatred ) at the predetermined times.
Day 1, workout 1 came and went. I got through it and I feel good despite the lactic acid burning in my calves and shin areas. My lungs and heart had no issue. I felt great other than my legs. I stretched and it helped with the pain. I still feel it a day afterwards but nonetheless I feel good.
This virus may have reached as far West as California in my Social Network . Edwin Villaneuva expressed that he may look into this program and App. Perhaps the community in fitness is a key motivator. We shall see.
